The group's activities encompass civil and marine engineering,
building construction, rail engineering, and property development.
Dean
and Dyball have a contract with Railtrack to Maintain the
Dawlish and Teignmouth Sea walls which carry the Great Western
Paddington to Penzance railway line.
Ivor
Mitchell, Senior Quantity Surveyor explains:
"Part
of our responsibility is to monitor the beach levels, sea
and weather conditions in this area. Weather and tidal conditions
in a certain combination will erode the beach sand and expose
the base of the sea wall. Under these conditions the sea wall
and consequently the railway line is at most risk.
WeatherNet
provide us with historic weather data which is plotted against
surveyed beach levels to produce graphs of sand movements
compared to specific weather conditions. This allows us to
predict the risk to the sea wall from forecast weather and
tidal conditions, and take the earliest possible response
action."
